SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1 Cumulative Update 6 fails to install

Whilst attempting to update my SQL Server 2k8 R2 SP1 install to CU6 the update would fail to install and the SQL Reporting Services service also failed to start with the following error:

‘The SQL Server Reporting Services (MSSQLSERVER) service failed to start due to the following error:
The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.’

To fix the problem I had to create the following registry key and restart the server.

Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\

Create a new DWORD ServicesPipeTimeout with a decimal value of 60000.

This registry entry increases the value in milliseconds for a service to timeout.
