At the heart of Enterprise Application Management lies the Enterprise App Catalog, a treasure trove of Win32 applications compiled for your convenience. With Intune, accessing and deploying these applications to your tenant has never been easier. Simply browse through the Enterprise App Catalog, select the applications that suit your needs, and effortlessly integrate them into your ecosystem.

What sets Enterprise App Management apart is its ability to streamline the process of application deployment. When you add an application from the Enterprise App Catalog to your Intune tenant, you’re not just acquiring the software; you’re embracing a world of convenience. Default installation settings, requirements, and detection protocols are automatically provisioned, sparing you the hassle of manual configuration.

But the power doesn’t stop there. Intune empowers you to tailor these settings according to your unique requirements. Whether it’s tweaking installation parameters or fine-tuning detection criteria, you have the flexibility to customise your app management experience to perfection.

One of the standout features of Intune is its robust hosting infrastructure. Enterprise App Catalog apps find a home in Microsoft storage, ensuring reliable accessibility and seamless delivery to your devices. With Intune at the helm, you can trust that your applications are in safe hands, ready to serve your organisation’s needs at a moment’s notice.

Enterprise App Management offers a host of benefits that revolutionise app management within your organisation:

  1. Streamlined App Management: With Enterprise App Management, the process of app management becomes a breeze. Save time and reduce complexity by seamlessly discovering and adding apps directly from the Intune console. This streamlined approach ensures efficiency and convenience at every step.
  2. Stay Current with Updates: Keeping your apps up-to-date is paramount, and Enterprise App Management makes it effortless. Easily create apps for new versions of products as they become available in the catalog, ensuring that your organidation stays current with the latest features and security enhancements.

When you add an app from the Enterprise App Catalog, Intune takes the initiative to prefill essential installation details, including commands for installation and uninstallation, installation time, user uninstallation options, installation behaviour, post-installation return codes, and whether to install the app for the system or the user. This prefilling process not only saves time but also ensures consistency and accuracy across your app deployments.

Moreover, Intune automatically prefills detection rules that devices must meet before the app is installed, such as file size, file version, and registry settings. Additionally, it fills in the requirements that devices must meet before installation, including the Windows OS architecture required and the minimum OS version. These pre-filled details streamline the deployment process and eliminate the guesswork, allowing for smoother and more reliable app installations.

Note that you are not restricted to the configuration applied by Microsoft, you can modify the all pre-populated fields if needed.

Enterprise App Catalog is available as an add-on via the Intune Suite or as a standalone purchase (search for Microsoft Intune Enterprise Application Management in admin.microsoft.com.

I have selected Beyond Compare as my application to install. Click Next.

As mentioned before, the applications are pre-populated so I don’t need to do anything here, however, I could, if I wanted to, modify the fields. for example, I could add an icon for the application. Click Next.

All the install/uninstall options are filled in. Click Next.

as are the Requirements. Click Next.

and finally, the Detection Rules. Click Next again.

Now I can click Add app to complete the process of creating the Enterprise App Catalog app. Then click Save.

The application will be prepared in the background.

and very shortly be available, for assignment, the console.

As with our Win32 apps, we can go into Assignments and targeted a relevant group or devices or users. Click the Edit link next to Assignments.

I have assigned this to my desktop device.

Installation on the endpoint

Since I have allowed toast notifications, I get a prompt to inform me that the application is being installed.

and completed sucessfully.

Checking the C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\IntuneManagementExtension\Logs\IntuneManagementExtension.log, I can see activity for that application.

Upgrading an application

Application upgrades as also handled with ease.

In this example, I had an earlier release of Notepad++ on my device.

I created an Enterprise App Catalog app for Notepad++, which is currently set as version 8.6.1. The Detection rule state that the install is valid for any targeted device which not running 8.6.1.

Therefore, when my device was targeted, the application downloaded and installed the application.

Super simple and super quick. Let’s hope Microsoft can add to the existing catalog and keep it up to date. A promising start for this new feature.
