New settings available for the iOS/iPadOS web clip app type

As part of the 2307 service release, Microsoft released some new settings for web clip apps.

A web app functions as a client-server application where the server supplies the app’s user interface, content, and functionality. Contemporary web-hosting platforms typically provide additional advantages, such as security features and load balancing. The web app is independently maintained on the internet. To link to this type of app, Microsoft Intune is employed, allowing administrators to assign user groups with access privileges to the application.

Using Intune, a shortcut to the web app is generated and added to the user’s device. On iOS/iPadOS devices, this results in the web app shortcut being conveniently placed on the home screen for easy access.

On iOS devices, when it is necessary to open new web clips (pinned web apps) in a protected browser, they will now launch in Microsoft Edge instead of the Intune Managed Browser. However, for older iOS web clips, it is essential to retarget them to ensure they also open in Microsoft Edge, rather than the Managed Browser.

The new settings released in 2307 are:

  • Full screen: When set to Yes, the web clip launches as a full-screen web app, devoid of any browser elements. This includes no URL or search bar, as well as no bookmarks.
  • Ignore manifest scope: If set to Yes, a full-screen web clip can navigate to an external website without displaying Safari’s user interface. However, if set to No, Safari UI will be shown when navigating away from the web clip’s URL. This option only applies when Full screen is set to No. This feature is available on iOS 14 and later.
  • Precomposed: When set to Yes, it prevents Apple’s application launcher, SpringBoard, from adding a glossy “shine” effect to the web clip’s icon.
  • Target application bundle identifier: Enter the application bundle identifier that specifies the application responsible for opening the given URL. This feature is available on iOS 14 and later.

We can see the new settings in the App information view.

Enter your web app information accordingly and click Next.

Target the deployment of the web app and click Next.

Create the app when ready by clicking Create.

On the next sync, the targeted device displays the new web app.

and the app launches successfully in full screen mode.

    1. Interesting Prajwal. Probably worth pinging the product group to see what’s going on. I reported the PowerShell default changes in 2307 weren’t available to be yet earlier today. Hope you’re well mate.

  1. thanks for the blog. realised if set to yes for Require a managed browser to open this link and yes for full screen, the web app will not be full screen. seems full screen is not supported in microsoft edge and supported in safari
