Add unmanaged PKG-type applications to managed macOS devices [Public Preview]

With the latest update, the Intune MDM agent for macOS devices now allows you to upload and deploy unmanaged PKG-type applications to managed macOS devices. This exciting feature empowers you to distribute custom PKG installers, including unsigned apps and component packages, effortlessly.

Microsoft lists the pre-requisites as:

  • Devices are managed by Intune.
  • The PKG file is smaller than 2GB in size.
  • The Microsoft Intune management agent for macOS version 2308.006 or greater is installed.
  • The PKG file successfully runs using the installer command in Terminal.

To add the app go to Apps\All apps\Add.

Navigate to the Select app type pane, and within the Other app types section, opt for the macOS app (PKG) option.

Click Select.

In the Add app pane, click Select app package file.

Browse to the location of your PKG install file.

Select OK on the App package file pane to add the app.

Enter the relevant App information details. Click Next.

Enter Minimum operating system in the Requirements section. Click Next.

If application rules are automatically generated, it’s worth noting that if there are multiple rules then the first app on the Included apps list is used for identifying the app. When happy click Next.

Target the app accordingly and finish up creating the application.

When complete the PKG will upload.

On the next application sync with Intune, the application will install on the targeted devices.
