Keep it Simple with Intune – #12 Deploying Microsoft Edge Stable via the MEM Admin Center

In part 12 of the Keep it Simple with Intune series, I’ll be showing you how you can deploy the new Microsoft Edge to your devices. It really is extremely simple to do and takes no time at all. We’ll be pushing the stable release to our devices but, as you can see from the screenshots, you have the option to also create an application for the Dev and Beta release channels.

Let’s get to it.

In the MEM Admin Center

In the MEM admin center,  select Apps\All apps.

Scroll down the Select app type blade to the Microsoft Edge, version 77 and later section. Note you have the option to deploy to Windows or macOS. We’ll be deploying out to Windows 10 (preview). Click Select.

This will load up the App app wizard and we can navigate through and configure our Edge application. I’m going to leave the first screen as default as there’s some great content here already. If I wish I could Show this app as a feature app in the Company Portal.  I’m going to leave that as is, because I’m going to push out as a required application with no user interaction needed. Click Next.

Now I have that option to select the Channel for my Edge application. As stated I have the choice to deploy out Beta or Dev but I’m going to select Stable.

When selecting the Channel it will automatically populate the Logo with the cool new Edge logo. Click Next to progress through the wizard.

Now we can select any required Scope tags for the application. I have left as default. Click Next.

In the Assignments section of the wizard, we need to choose the relevant groups for either a Required, Available or Uninstall deployment.

I have assigned a device group to the Required deployment type by clicking Add group and choosing the appropriate group I wish to deploy to. Click Next.

The final screen of the wizard is the Review + create section. Here I can see all the settings I have defined and go back and alter if I wish to do so. Click Create when you are happy with your configuration.

On the endpoints

On the devices, since this is a Required install, you’ll see the application is deployed out on the next sync. You should be familiar with how to manually sync a device from previous posts in the series. If not check the links at the bottom of this post to discover previous posts in the series which show you how to do this.

Because the Edge application is being deployed out as a Win32App. You can use the IntuneManagementExtension.log file to see the progress of the installation and this log can be used for troubleshooting any problems. The file is located in the C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\IntuneManagementExtension\Logs folder.

The delivery of Edge could not be any simpler.

Be aware that you can also manage the browser with Edge security baselines. I did a post about pushing out Edge beta browser at the end of last year. That blog post shows you how to utilise the baselines and was also deployed via the Azure portal. So you have a nice comparison on how to achieve either using the Azure or DeviceManagement portals.
